Jayalalithaa inaugurates the scheme through video conference from Chennai The much-awaited Rs.1,928-crore Hogenakkal Water Supply and Fluoride Mitigation Scheme for Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts turned into a reality on Wednesday with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurating it through video conference from Chennai. Accusing the DMK of delaying the project whilein power, Ms. Jayalalithaa said it was the AIADMK government that gave the much required impetus. Tracing the history of the scheme,she said it was initiated by late Chief Minister M.G.Ramachandra n in 1986 at a cost of Rs.120 crore. The AIADMK government made an effort to revive the project in 1994, at a revised estimate of Rs.350 crore. But, funds constraint hampered the effort, she said. Jaya seeks damages from karnataka

The State has approached the Supreme Court once again on the Cauvery issue, this time seeking damages from Karnataka to the tune of about Rs. 2,480 crore for not following orders of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT). Besides, the State wanted the court to pass an order, directing Karnataka to release 53.18 thousand million cubic feet (tmc ft), a shortfall that occurred during 2012-2013 as computed on a pro-rata formula. Of the amount claimed by Tamil Nadu, Rs. 1,045.7crore was on account of loss of production of food grains (paddy), biomass and electricity, the remaining Rs. 1,433.91 crore was due to the cultivation of paddy, sugarcane and semi-dry crops by Karnataka in areas that were in excess of the neighbouring State’s entitlement, as per the interim order. The suit,which was filed on May 9, has not yet been numbered. The authorities here are expecting that the matter would be taken up after summer vacation of the court. Jayalalitha offers prayer at srirangam temple:

Jayalalitha visited sriranganatha swamy temple at srirangam on thursday. She was received with temple honours by the priests at ranga ranga gopuram. She went in a battery car to aryabhatta vaasal. Then she walked up to garudhalvaar sannidhi where she offered prayers. She also offered prayers at dwajasthambam. She went to moolavar sannidhi and offered prayers. Then she proceeded to ahobila mutt via melur road and received the blessings of the 46th azhagiyasingar sri ranganatha yatheendra mahadesikan, who took charge recently. She also visited the brindavans of the 41st,44th and 45th jeeyars of the mutt and offered floral tributes. T.P. Poonachi, khadi and village industries minister, R. Manoharan, MLA & AIADMK chief whip in the assembly and district collectors, accompanied the chief minister to the temple.

"AMMA UNAVAGAMS" extended to the 9 corporations

The low-cost tiffin centres, which have become popular among the poor people in the city, were launched in nine other cities in Tamil Nadu by chief minister Jayalalithaa. Jayalalithaa launched the " Amma Unavagams " in Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Salem, Tiruppur, Tuticorin, Vellore and Erode through video conferencing from the state secretariat, an official release said. The nine corporations would have 10 canteens each. She also launched the addition of new items such as 'Pongal' for breakfast and curryleaf rice and lemon rice for lunch in the 200 canteens run in Chennai. 'Amma' canteens offer affordable breakfast and lunch for the welfare of daily wagers, auto and rickshaw drivers, vendors and other floating population in these corporations across the state.
